Vibrant flowers to sow in September for an ‘early’ summer display

A savvy gardener has taken to social media to share two low-maintenance perennials to sow in September in time for early summer displays.

Beloved perennials, which need Autumn weather conditions to establish a healthy root system, are popular because they are vibrant and diverse.

According to green-thumbed enthusiast Carmen Johnston, who shared the tip with her 312,000 followers on TikTok, the plants do best require little water while attracting pollinators.

In a clip captioned “Best low maintenance perennials”, the gardener listed the “gorgeous” Yarrow Yarrow and Lavender as two plants that thrive in the USDA Hardiness Zones three to nine.

The United Kingdom lies in the USDA Plant Hardiness regions of Zones Six through Nine, with some variations across regions and seasons.

Yarrow Yarrow is a popular semi-evergreen because it produces dense clusters in pink, red, and yellow, and is magnetic to pollinators.

Neutral to slightly acidic soils are ideal for this vibrant flower, but its drought-tolerant properties mean it can be left to its own devices once planted.

Growveg.com states that the flower is also among the “most cold-tolerant perennial flowers”, as they can tolerate temperatures as low as -37 Celsius in the wintertime.

Because the seeds germinate in cold and wet conditions, they should be planted in autumn to give them time to start blooming in Spring and summer.

The second plant to consider planting is lavender, which will have just enough time to root out if planted in September, once the summer heat has dissipated.

The plant typically has a preference for Meditteranean conditions, but still does well when the plant is at the end of the scorching summer heat.

According to Johnston, Lavender and Yarrow Yarrow are reliable picks for gardeners because they “come back year after year, that do not need a lot of water”.

The expert specifies that both flowering plants work well from zones three to nine, adding: “The pollinators love it and the deer do not like it.”
