Marcus Wareing shares how to store tomatoes for best flavour
Properly storing different foods is key to keeping them tasting and looking their best.
While many foods are best kept in the fridge, there are some that do not favour this method of storage.
If stored in a fridge, some types of food can “decay” and get “wasted”, warned experts at GE Appliances.
The experts have shared six types of foods to “never refrigerate” – and there are a few surprising ones.
Stored in the fridge, coffee is “more likely to pick up other flavours around it”, making the drink taste awful when the time comes to brew it.

Instead, keep coffee grounds and beans out of the fridge and in an alternate location like inside a sealed container in the pantry to help maintain their flavour.
According to the pros, the cold temperature in a fridge “mess with their delicious flavour and texture”.
Store tomatoes at room temperature outside of the fridge to help protect their flavour and juiciness.
Bananas need room temperature rather than the fridge for two reasons. The experts explained: “The warm temperatures help the fruit finish ripening and the light and air slow down decay.”

Bananas should be kept on the countertop, in the pantry or hanging from a banana hook. This will help the bananas become ripe, and prevent the peel from browning as quickly.
Unless households prefer stale, dried-out slices on their favourite sandwich, stash loaves of bread in the pantry instead of the fridge.
If a loaf of bread is not going to be used, it can be kept on the counter for the first 24 hours, and then placed in the freezer to extend the shelf life.
Honey can turn hard and lumpy if it is placed in the fridge. To maintain its smooth gooey drip, it’s best to leave honey at room temperature.
Potatoes also need to live in room-temperature storage to maintain their texture.
Because the moisture of the fridge can make them gritty and sweet, potatoes are best kept at room temperature in a paper bag.
7. Fresh herbs
A fridge saps fresh herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme of their flavour and dries them out too.
Instead, tuck them in a small glass, stems down and in a little room-temperature water, and stash them on the countertop, out of direct sunlight.
