Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series Black Mirror will be returning for a seventh season on Netflix. Variety and Deadline reported the renewal of the cult-followed series, which released its sixth season in June.
Prior to that season, Black Mirror had been on hiatus for four years. Season five had comprised just three episodes and followed the debut of the interactive film, Bandersnatch, where the viewer’s choices shape the outcome of the storyline.
The delay between season five and season six can likely be attributed to licensing issues following Brooker’s departure from the production company, House of Tomorrow, which owned the rights to the show. That company was acquired by Banijay Rights in 2020 and now licenses Black Mirror’s rights to Netflix.
According to Variety, the new season of Black Mirror is on schedule to go into production later this year with Brooker serving as executive producer alongside Jessica Rhoades and Annabel Jones, the latter of whom he co-founded the Broke and Bones production company with.
As for season seven, the number of episodes and their storylines are still being kept private. Stay tuned for more information on Black Mirror.
