Make Jamie Oliver’s festive gingerbread biscuits for just 19p – recipe

Making gingerbread biscuits from scratch is easy to do with a handful of pantry ingredients.

And with Jamie Oliver’s recipe, anyone can do it in less than one hour from start to finish.

Sharing the formula on his website, the British chef claimed: “Kids will love making, decorating and eating these biscuits – but let’s face it, more the eating!

“They can either be given as gifts, or used to decorate the tree. Make things more fun with a variety of cutters.”

What’s more, they cost just 19p per serving when buying the ingredients exclusively at Tesco.

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C and prepare two baking trays with a sheet of parchment paper each.

For the dough, combine the sieved flour and bicarbonate of soda in a large bowl followed by the spices.

Take a pan and place it over low heat, then add in the butter, sugar and golden syrup to melt it all together.

Stir until the sugar dissolves, then add the mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix these until a stiff dough is formed, then cut it in half.

Transfer the paper from the baking sheets to a work surface and place a portion of the dough on each.

Roll it out to a thickness of 5mm, then cut out the gingerbread shapes directly on the paper, leaving a 2cm gap between each. Save the cuttings to make more shapes, or simple, round ginger biscuits.

Carefully lift the papers back onto the baking sheets and bake in the oven for around 12 minutes, or until the shapes are lightly golden.

Remove from the oven and leave to cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Once cool, ice the gingerbread men and decorate them with sprinkles, sweets or even a dusting of edible glitter.
