I tried everything to get rid of fruit flies, including a deep clean and traps – the solution was simple and free | The Sun

AFTER being left stumped over how to get rid of fruit flies from her home, one woman tried a simple trick that worked wonders.

Majda Medved took to her social media account to reveal exactly what she did to achieve the desired results.

Starting from the beginning, she said: “Okay, so this is really embarrassing but I’m going to tell you guys anyway because maybe it can help someone.

“We just recently had a really bad case of fruit flies and we did all the homemade traps and store bought traps and it was catching a lot of them.”

But no matter what they tried, the fruit flies just kept coming back, leaving Majda feeling frustrated.

She even wondered if they had a dirty home, despite feeling as though their kitchen was “fairly clean”.

In a bid to ensure they were 100% certain about their cleanliness, she and her family decided to take apart their kitchen and give it a deep clean.

Yet, they still had fruit flies.

“Then I did a little bit of research and I found out that the traps really only catch the adult fruit flies,” she said.

“The bigger problem is the eggs that they lay.”

TikTok user @majdamedved said they lay most of their eggs inside drains and even if you run water down them, it won’t help tackle the issue.

“It has to be boiling water,” she explained. “So that’s what we did, we poured boiling hot water down our kitchen sink and we were like, ‘Great, no more fruit flies!’ and we were wrong.”

The fruit flies just kept coming back. And this continued until Majda realised that there’s a high likelihood that all of the drains in her home are connected.

It meant to get rid of them, she’d have to pour boiling hot water down every sink in the house.

She said: “Shower, bathtub, even the utility sink that we have in the basement that we never use.

“Once we did that… And we had to do that a few times because this isn’t going to be like a one and done type of thing.

“You do have to do it a few times because think about the adults that are still flying around, probably laying more eggs in the sink.

“So it’s going to take a few days, but I promise you once you do that, they’re gonna be gone.”

In the caption, she added: “We did it three times a day (morning, afternoon, night) and after two days there were none left!!! Keep the traps out as well.”

People were quick to comment on her post as one person wrote: “This happened to me last year! I used baking soda and vinegar in each sink and boiling water (sic)."

Another said: “Fruit flies are the worst!! thank you for the tips."

“My daughter just sent this to me, we indeed have a fruit fly problem, thank you,” a third posted with a red heart emoji.
