Central Saint Martins is at the top of its game. The London-based university is not only the most successful fashion institute in the UK but holds status across global corners. Central Saint Martins’ educational grounds have nurtured the likes of Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Phoebe Philo, spearheading their careers cemented in history.
Dr. Martens is joining forces with nine Central Saint Martins’ MA students to set their artistic touch on the 1460 boot. From Samuel Ross‘ A-COLD-WALL* to Rick Owens and more, the model is a canvas for creative expression passed onto the next generation of CSM designers. The graduates will compete to make their designs a reality, awarding four contestants with £5,000 GBP to help kick off their careers.
The designers will style a final look for their graduate collections, bringing the 1460 boot under the spotlight. First up is Yanya Cheng, who gives the classic leather boot breathable tule lining and ribboned straps that wrap around the perimeters. Alvaro Martinez creates a boot-shaped dress with dual-sided toe boxes, giving his shoe squared toes and a battered look. Atli Alfredsson’s fluid menswear language is reflected on distressed and gradient leather, complemented by boxy suiting that balances masculinity and femininity.
Dhruv Bandil’s Indian heritage is outlined through whimsical silhouettes, standing next to SYSTEM designer Finlay Vincent Roberts, keeping things functional with removable collars and workwear uniforms. Traditional lacewear delicately accents Joyce Bao’s designs, seeing Maximilian Raynor deliver cascading menswear that is whimsical and theatrical.
