Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara has been arrested during the Venice Film Festival over an alleged sexual assault in France.
The 22-year-old star, best known for his role in Prime Video’s smash teen film franchise My Fault, was apprehended by Italian authorities during the festival on Saturday.
It was the day before he was set to receive an award for his fledgling career and successes.
He was set to receive a best young actor honour given out by Filming Italy and had an active international arrest warrant out on him at the request of the French authorities.
He’s currently in protected custody with Italian State Police and the Venice court of appeals will rule on his case before the extradition proceeding can begin, according to Variety.
Filming Italy has since suspended the award after getting wind of the arrest, which they said was a ‘precaution’ pending the outcome of the case.
The group has no connection the main Venice Film Festival and takes place on the sidelines as a fringe event.
On Sunday, Venice Film Festival said in a statement published on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘Following the news articles which have been emerging on various websites, regarding the Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara being arrested in Venice, the Biennale hereby clarifies that his presence in Venice was not linked to any events or productions related to the 80th Venice International Film Festival.’
Guevara, who had initially publicised his arrival in Venice to his 6.4million Instagram followers, made his acting debut on the Spanish version of Norwegian teen drama Skam.
He also appeared in HIT and Netflix’s You’re Nothing Special, as well as Spanish series Cómo mandarlo todo a la mierda on HBO Max last year.
While Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old in 1977, and has remained a fugitive of US law ever since after fleeing ahead of sentencing, Allen has repeatedly denied his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow’s allegations of sexual abuse when she was aged seven in 1992.
The filmmaker was investigated for the alleged assault by police, but no charges were brought against him.
Meanwhile Besson, who is known for movies including Léon and The Fifth Element, was accused of rape by an actress in 2018.
He denied the claims and was cleared of all charges in June.
Several other women – including a former assistant and a casting assistant – have also accused Besson of inappropriate sexual behaviour, which he ‘categorically denied’ and no charges were pressed.
Metro.co.uk has contacted Gabriel Guevara’s rep and Polizia de Stato in Venice for comment.
