Today, she only wears her religious habit<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=9FXhUyC4d6Y%3Frel%3D0<\/p>\n<p>When she first arrived at the convent, Catherine said she felt a mixture of nerves and excitement thinking &#8216;what have I got myself into&#8217; &#8211; she also got a surprise when she learned her hair would be chopped off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recalling her first impressions, she said: &#8216;I was greeted with open arms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;When the door closed behind me I felt like I was in another planet. I knew there was something not quite true in that life. It&#8217;s not something in drugs, there&#8217;s not something true in relationships that are not wholly pure relationships. I didn&#8217;t want to do this anymore.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;So that&#8217;s when I started to set my sights on the contemplative life to pray for others [so] that they would be also liberated from the things that were binding me to living a life that was not a happy life.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Sister Dorothea ended up entering the Christchurch convent when she was 28 and she said the toughest thing was leaving her family behind as they were not Catholic and so &#8216;you can imagine that wasn&#8217;t easy for them.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Asked if she ever questioned the sacrifices she had made by becoming a nun, she replied: &#8216;Not exactly question them but I&#8217;ve certainly felt the desire for those things that I&#8217;ve left.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We give up being able to have a family, being able to have your own husband. You can still have those longings, we&#8217;re still women and we&#8217;ve\u00a0got many womanly instincts and needs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;[But] if we know ourselves and we know why&#8230; we&#8217;ve given them up, then it&#8217;s easy to work through those things.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Sister Cushla, another resident of the convent, says she also has no regrets about becoming a nun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While her dream as a teenager was to get married and have a large family, she says she&#8217;s realized all the things she &#8216;wanted from a husband&#8217; comes in a &#8216;much deeper, much more spiritual way from Jesus Christ through prayer.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her path to sisterhood came after she did a did a school project on the Carmelite nuns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/04\/10\/77036699-12672167-Sister_Cushla_another_resident_of_the_convent_says_she_also_has_-a-38_1699094258039.jpg\" height=\"336\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Sister Cushla, another resident of the convent, says she also has no regrets about becoming a nun<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/05\/17\/77036677-12672167-In_terms_of_keeping_in_touch_with_family_the_nuns_are_allowed_mo-a-1_1699204486095.jpg\" height=\"343\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>In terms of keeping in touch with family, the nuns are allowed monthly visits from relatives but they must sit in a different room with a grille dividing them<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/04\/10\/77036685-12672167-Food_at_the_convent_is_vegetarian_as_the_first_Carmelites_gave_u-a-36_1699094257961.jpg\" height=\"347\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Food at the convent is vegetarian as &#8216;the first Carmelites gave up meat as way to be poor&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/04\/10\/77036703-12672167-_Being_a_nun_has_its_hard_moments_I_feel_sometimes_the_desire_to-a-37_1699094258017.jpg\" height=\"336\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;[Being a nun] has its hard moments&#8230; I feel sometimes the desire to be in the arms of a man,&#8217; says Sister Catherine<\/p>\n<p>She mused: &#8216;There was something that attracted me about them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;But also something about the whole idea that repulsed me. I took away the pamphlets and over the years I developed this love-hate relationship with them.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Now, as a longtime nun, Sister Cushla believes that &#8216;our prayer here does have an impact on the outside [world].&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>She adds: &#8216;We have to live by faith because we usually don&#8217;t see the results of our prayer.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In terms of their daily schedule, the nuns have to attend prayer seven times a day with the first call at 6am.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other timed events include meal time &#8211; where the food is vegetarian as &#8216;the first Carmelites gave up meat as way to be poor&#8217; &#8211; two hours of silent prayers and two hours of recreation a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clips in the documentary show the nuns together doing art and playing badminton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sister Catherine says this is &#8216;a very joyful time&#8230; very rejuvenating,&#8217; while Sister Dorothea says the downtime &#8216;gives us the strength to go back into that silence again.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>With such a jampacked routine, Sister Cushla says she found monastic life &#8216;rather exhausting to begin with&#8217; and even on Saturdays\u00a0 &#8216;you seem to clean the whole monastery.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>To earn an income, Sister Catherine reveals that the nuns &#8216;make alter breads for many of the parishes in Christchurch and sell them.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>In terms of keeping in touch with family, the nuns are allowed monthly visits from relatives but they must sit in different rooms with a grille dividing them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sister Cushla says that the barrier doesn&#8217;t bother her as &#8216;we weren&#8217;t actually big huggers in our family anyway.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At one point in the short film, Sister Catherine is asked if she might leave the monastery one day, and she says it could be a possibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Offering some clues as to what would cause her to leave her habit behind, she says: &#8216;You give up the possibility of a career, the possibility of a life a committed relationship with a man the joys that come with that, the pleasures that come with that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;[Being a nun] has its hard moments. I feel sometimes the desire to be in the arms of a man but not in the sense of longing for something that I don&#8217;t have or can&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Just pondering the mystery of &#8220;why me, why has God called me and why has he put in my heart this desire that he&#8217;s fulfilling in abundance?&#8221;&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sister Dorothea says the belief in heaven is the only thing keeping her going.
