Sir Michael Caine used a walking stick as he made a rare red carpet appearance in London on Wednesday.

The 90-year-old actor was seen in the capital midweek when he joined the cast of The Great Escaper for the movie’s premiere at London’s BFI Southbank.

The star sat down as he posed for photos at the star-studded bash, looking as sharp as ever in a navy suit with a pale blue shirt.

Sir Michael – who has been seen using a walking stick and a frame on a number of occasions since suffering a broken ankle after falling on ice in 2018 – was helped onto the red carpet by director Oliver Parker.

The iconic actor also posed for photos with the cast as they gathered around him.

In The Great Escaper, inspired by a true story, Sir Michael plays Bernard Jordan who staged a – you guessed it – great escape from his care home in 2014 to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy.

Jordan went on a 48-hour adventure to commemorate the former soldiers’ fallen comrades at the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The film’s synopsis also notes that his journey ‘marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene’, who is played by the late Oscar-winning actress Glenda Jackson.

Sir Michael recently suggested playing Bernard is ‘probably’ going to be his final role.

He told the Daily Telegraph: ‘I’m 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that.’

Sir Michael added: ‘With COVID and all that, I hadn’t done a picture for three years, and I thought I was finished.

‘And I suddenly did it — and had such a wonderful time… I was so happy to do it.’

‘I just loved the character of Bernie,’ he also said. ‘I thought he was incredible, and it’s so beautifully written.’

Following the news of Jackson’s death in June, Sir Michael called his The Great Escaper co-star ‘one of our greatest movie actresses’.

Jackson had just finished working with the Hollywood legend on The Great Escaper before she died ‘peacefully’ at age 87 after a brief illness.

Sir Michael said in a statement to PA: ‘Glenda was one of our greatest movie actresses.

‘It was a privilege to work with her on The Great Escaper recently, our second film together.’

Sir Michael – who also worked with Jackson nearly 50 years ago in The Romantic Englishwoman – added: ‘It was as wonderful an experience this time as it was 50 years ago. I shall miss her.’

Got a story?

If you’ve got a celebrity story, video or pictures get in touch with the Metro.co.uk entertainment team by emailing us celebtips@metro.co.uk, calling 020 3615 2145 or by visiting our Submit Stuff page – we’d love to hear from you.
