Waiting in the queue to go through airport security can be a tedious process, especially when you’re moving at what feels like a snail’s pace and surrounded by crowds.
Then of course there are passengers who are guilty of some of the most annoying airport habits which can be a whole other frustrating experience in itself.
However, there are some small tricks and tips that could massively improve your experience, whether it helps to cut your waiting time or simply makes the actual security checks process go faster.
Here we take a look at some of the top airport security hacks you need to know about before your next trip to the airport…
Choose queues next to empty lanes
When it’s not too busy, some of the security lanes aren’t manned.
However, as crowds pick up in busier periods, staff come over to open another lane – and they often encourage passengers in the queue next to it to join, to get the crowds moving.
Turn left when you arrive
Research has shown that because most people are right-handed, they subconsciously go straight for the queues on the right.
Turn left, and you could find yourself in some of the airport’s shorter queues and get through the process much quicker.
Bring your own clear plastic bag
If you’re bringing toiletries, save yourself time searching through your bag at the airport and queuing for plastic bags by packing your own at home.
Make sure to stick to the rules with no liquids over 100ml, and a clear plastic bag (food freezer bags can often be a good option but check the rules at your chosen airport before you travel).
Use the queue time wisely
There’s nothing quite as frustrating as being right at the front of the queue but having to spend ages waiting while others remove belts/jewellery and dig around their bags for belongings and gadgets that need to be placed in the tray.
As you get nearer to the security checks it’s worth sorting these things in preparation – remove belts and jewellery, take gadgets out of your bag and have your liquids ready in the clear plastic bag.
Not only will it make the process a lot quicker and smoother for you, but your fellow passengers will be grateful too!
Consider your fellow passengers
If you’re in a rush, it’s worth considering which queue has the best chances of moving the fastest.
For example, avoid queues where there are big groups, especially if you see multiple members with both handbags and cabin bags which means the need for two airport trays each – and a much slower process.
