For Iskra Lawrence, being on the red carpet is about far more than looking glamorous in fancy clothes.
The curvy model, 28, who serves as an activist for body diversity and self-care, said she feels a personal responsibility to set an example when she gets dressed for events.
“Being curvier, I think it’s important to break the rules and I think it’s important to show that you’re confident in whatever you wear and make an impact on the red carpet when, for so long, we’ve only seen one body type and size make waves,” the British model told Page Six Style at the launch event for her Teleties hair tie collaboration. “I’m really trying to break through and say that no matter what size you are, you can rock it.”
Lawrence, a National Eating Disorders Association ambassador, is particularly troubled by the fact that many fashion brands that do offer plus sizes limit their offerings to stretchy, skintight tops and dresses.
“I feel the pressure to not wear body-con all the time when so many shapes and so many obvious go-tos are tight; I really try to push back on that,” she explained.
“It’s hard because sometimes oversized suits or jackets just don’t fit, so it’s a balance between stretchy things and those that fit better. But we try to find a way to do things out of the box, because we should be able to wear what everyone else does.”
When it comes to hair care, however, the #AerieREAL Role Model is all about following the rules, especially because her blond locks are constantly being blow-dried, curled and straightened for photoshoots and events — not to mention exposed to salt water and chlorine during those beach shoots.
“I started braiding [my hair] at night and putting a mini tie at the bottom. I do hair masks all the time. I’ll do a mixture of Kérastase or coconut oil now and again,” she said, adding that she reaches for Teleties to avoid breakage or damage when wearing a ponytail.
Lawrence added that she’s sworn off heat-styling her hair during her monthlong break between fashion week and May’s Cannes Film Festival, where she’ll be out in full force on the red carpet — hopefully wearing a chic suit or two.
