WHEN you move to a new home, you might not know who your energy and water suppliers are – but there's an easy way to find out.
It's important to be clued up on who your gas, electricity and water firm is so you can make sure you're getting the best deals.
How can you find out who supplies your gas, water and electricity when you move house?
There are a few ways you can find out who your supplier is.
If you don’t have a recent bill for your new home, the simplest way to find out is to ask the estate agent or previous owner.
However, if the above aren’t possible, there are numbers you can call to check and websites you can visit.
For your gas supplier:
You can now find out your supplier on the Meter Point Administration Service's website to get details of your gas supplier.
There's also a number to ring if you need your Meter Point Reference Number, or MPRN.

For your electricity supplier:
To find out who supplies your electricity, you should contact your local electricity distribution company.
You can use the Energy Networks Association postcode search tool to do this.
For your water supplier:
You can’t switch you water supplier for a better deal – unlike your gas and electricity.
Certain areas use different suppliers, see below.
- Scotland –public company Scottish Water.
- Northern Ireland – government owned company Northern Ireland Water
- England or Wales – your water will be supplied by one of 32 private companies depending on where you live; these can be checked by using the Consumer Council for Water's website or the Ofwat website.
- If you live on the border of two different water areas, then you should contact both possible providers to confirm which you come under.
How to switch energy provider
Switching energy providers is fairly simple – and can save you hundreds of pounds a year.
Use a price comparison website to find the cheapest deal – what one you'll get depends on the area you live in and your usage.
When you've found one, all you have to do is contact the new supplier.
It helps to have the following information – which you can find on your bill – to hand to give the new supplier.
- Your postcode
- Name of your existing supplier
- Name of your existing deal and how much you pay
- An up-to-date meter reading
It will then notify your current supplier and begin the switch.
It should take no longer than three weeks to complete the switch and your supply won't be interrupted in that time.
