Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher are both extraordinarily talented athletes and the best racing car drivers in the world. Lewis is currently Formula One’s highest-paid driver, but Michael has earned more money than his British counterpart over the course of his long and successful career.

Lewis Hamilton has an estimated net worth of £260million, according to this year’s Times Rich List.

This is a rise of £36million on last year.

In 2015, Lewis was ranked as the richest British sportsperson at the time, with a fortune of £88million.

His wealth has evidently increased since, with the two-year contract he signed with Mercedes in 2018 reported to be worth up to £40million a year.

This makes the British talent the best-paid driver in the history of Formula One.

Lewis will compete today, July 4, in another race in the 2021 Formula One (F1) World Championship.

This year’s tournament is Lewis’ eighth.

A seven-time world champion, the 36-year-old is in the running to be Britain’s richest ever athlete.

Last year, the English driver became the most decorated driver in F1 history, equalling Michael Schumacher’s seven world driver’s titles.

This year, Lewis might win his eighth title.

However, even if he doesn’t win the tournament, the racing star will keep driving. He said in March this year: “Of course it’s the ultimate dream [an eighth title], but I don’t think that’s going to be the deciding factor in whether I stay or keep going.

“It’s more, when I put that helmet on, do I still have that smile when I leave the garage? It’s going back to: do you enjoy it?” Lewis added.

“I got into racing because I loved racing. I think that’s got to always be at the core of what I do. If I don’t love racing, if all you’re going for is accolades, if all you’re going for is titles, I feel like I could potentially lose my way.”

Born in Stevenage in Hertfordshire, Lewis now owns a house in Monaco, an apartment in Manhattan, and an estate in Colorado.

The racing star has many other interests apart from driving, including fashion, music, and art.

In 2018, he launched a clothing line in collaboration with well-known American fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger.

Although Lewis is F1’s highest-paid driver, German racing legend Michael Schumacher has more money in the bank than him.

Michael was sadly forced to retire from racing in December 2013 when he suffered a head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps.

During the course of his career, the German driver accumulated an impressive fortune and it is estimated that he is worth $800million, according to Forbes.

That is equivalent to around £588million, making him one of the top five richest athletes in the world.

Only Vince McMahon, Ion Tiriac, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods are richer than him, according to Forbes and Celebrity Net Worth.

Michael continues to recuperate from his injury in his Switzerland home.
