We put supermarket champagne for under £20 a bottle to the test and reveal which one is the best for Christmas

But if your heart is set on champagne some bottles can leave you feeling a bit flat due to their eye-watering price tags.

Savvy shopper JANE ATKINSON knows where to find a bargain though, and tested out supermarket champagnes selling for less than £20 a bottle – awarding each a fizz factor out of five.

With Christmas less than 40 days away, follow her lead and stock up on lovely bubbly from your local supermarket.

ALDI VEUVE MONSIGNY CHAMPAGNE BRUT
Price: £11.49

One of Aldi’s best selling bottles of booze, and at this price it is hardly surprising.

It won a “silver outstanding” medal at this year’s International Wine And Spirits competition.

Crisp and lemony and great for the price but it doesn’t have the taste quality of some of the others.

CO-OP LES PIONNIERS CHAMPAGNE

Price: £18.99

Respected champagne house Piper Heidsieck makes this for Co-op – so it’s a real bargain.

Very light, with a burst of berry flavours and made up of 70 per cent pinot noir combined with pinot meunier and chardonnay, making it richer than some of the others I tried – perfect for parties.

MORRISONS THE BEST BRUT CHAMPAGNE

Price: £19

This skilful blend of three grape varieties delivers a fantastic champagne with a lovely taste of lemon zest and a clean, crisp, dry finish.

It also has a fantastic effervescence.

You are guaranteed to kick off your Christmas Day in style if you pop open a bottle of this top-rated fizz.

M&S ABEL CHARLOT BRUT NV CHAMPAGNE

Price: £18.49

A creamy, apple taste with a slightly nutty flavour and a fresh, dry finish.

M&S says you can keep this for up to a year – but why would you? It is Christmas, after all.

The richest-tasting drink I tested, so if you prefer lighter fizz this is not for you.

SAINSBURY’S BRUT NV CHAMPAGNE, TASTE THE DIFFERENCE

Price: £18

Aged for two years – and the ideal accompaniment to canapes, says Sainsbury’s.

With a yeasty, apple flavour and a slight hint of peach, this is a fruity and very drinkable champers.

The lightest-tasting one tested.

If you can, save it for those New Year celebrations.

TESCO FINEST PREMIER CRU CHAMPAGNE

Price: £19

Award-winning champers – taking gold at a major competition in 2017 and silver this year – it sure has the wow factor.

A great fruity fizz without being sickly. Crisp but not too dry.

Snap this one up – top-quality bubbly at a knockdown price. My favourite.
