Though the British Royal Family is trying to put on a brave front — things are looking quite perilous across the pond. Prince Andrew, the Duke of York has found himself amid one of the biggest royal scandals of a decade.
Prior to financier and sex offender, Jeffery Epstein’s suicide this past summer — Prince Andrew was in his inner circle. The men had been close friends since meeting in 1999 and they maintained their friendship even after Epstein was convicted and jailed for soliciting a minor in 2008.
Though the duke had attempted to sweep his friendship with Epstein under a rug — it all came to ahead once again when the businessman hanged himself in prison. One of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Roberts, also accused the prince of sexual abuse. Though the prince attempted to distance himself from the scandal, it only got worse after he did a no-holds-bar interview with BBC Newsnight. Also, in the interview, the duke declared that he did not regret his friendship with Epstein.
This revelation has cost the prince and his family a great deal.
Prince Andrew has been removed from his royal duties
After the absolute frenzy that surrounded the prince following the BBC interview — he decided that it was best to not continue his duties as a senior member of the royal family. “It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstances relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family’s work and the valuable work going on in the many organisations and charities that I am proud to support,” he said in a statement. “Therefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission.”
However, it’s not as simple as Prince Andrew fading into the background, his business dealings are also being called into question. This has also been devastating for his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
This is why Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice can’t take any of Prince Charles’ royal duties
Techinically — though they have royal titles — the princesses aren’t working royals. They take on very limited royal duties for their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II from time to time. In the past — Prince Andrew has advocated for his daughters to have a full time but he’s been shot down.
On Pod Save the Queen, Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers explained the current structure of the royal family. “It was put to me that Andrew was potentially putting out that he would be willing to step back from his patronages and charities if the girls were allowed [them],” Myers said. “But to be honest, they are non-working members of the Royal Family. It definitely doesn’t fit in with how Charles and William see it. Charles certainly wants a more streamlined Royal Family so I can’t see that they’ll sort of, sub him off and bring in these two. I don’t think that would go down well with the public, either. They agree with Charles’ MO of having a more streamlined Royal Family in the future.”

Beabea – wow! I'm so happy for you my dearest big sissy and dear Edo. It's been a long time coming and you two are meant to be. 📷 by me!! “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement. We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to actually be married. We share so many similar interests and values and we know that this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness”
The British Royal Family will be forever changed by the Prince Andrew scandal
Since Prince Andrew was a patron of over 200 charities — the other senior royals are going to have to step in. “So, you know, you might see William, Kate, Harry and Meghan involved in this,” Myers revealed. “They will be lumbered with a lot more work, you’d imagine. He was a patron of 230-odd charities, it is an awful lot.”
Also, this comes at a terrible time for Princess Beatrice who is newly engaged. Instead of the lavish wedding ceremony that was afforded her sister, the princess’ wedding will probably be a much more lowkey affair. “It will be in a castle I imagine in the hills of Italy, somewhere where there won’t be any press, maybe one release of a photograph,” Myers explained.
This may have also thrown a wrench in Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle’s hope to step away from the spotlight.
