When Meghan, Duchess of Sussex arrived in the U.K. to join the British royal family, she was very much out of her element. The outspoken feminist, actor, and activist was leaving behind her anonymity, a successful career, Suits, and everything she’d ever known.
While Meghan received a warm welcome from Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, she hoped to bond with Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. After all, Kate was once in Meghan’s position. The mother-of-three had met and fallen in love with Prince William during their college years. She experienced first hand the major adjustments it took to make it in the royal family.
In fact, despite their very different personality, Meghan went out of her way to try and bond with Kate. Sadly, things never panned out.
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle never became true friends
Though they both have fantastic attributes, it’s no secret that Kate and Meghan are very different people. Meghan has been outspoken for the majority of her life, taking charge of her image and her career. In fact, her work ethic and gusto often put her at odds with palace staffers.
In contrast, Kate has taken a more traditional role as a complement to Prince William. Though she’s found her stride in her work in early childhood education and development, it took a moment to find it. Unfortunately, the duo never got a chance to bond.
“Of all the people in the royal family, Meghan said she had hoped to develop a close relationship with Kate, but was never given the chance,” a source told Daily Mail. “It was hurtful and disappointing for Meghan.”
Meghan Markle is disappointed in her relationship with Kate Middleton
Like Prince Harry, Meghan hoped that she might live up to the “fab four” expectations. Unfortunately, Prince Harry and Prince William’s already strained relationship with one another did not foster a good environment for her to bond with Kate.
It was also hurtful to Meghan that Kate seemingly stood on the sidelines and did not reach out of her as she endured relentless racially and gender charged harassment from the British press. Royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand write in their upcoming book Finding Freedom,
Meghan would agree with the assessment that the duchesses were not the best of friends. Their relationship hadn’t progressed much since she was Harry’s girlfriend. Meghan envisioned Kate would reach out and help her understand everything an outsider to the Firm needed to know. That didn’t happen. Meghan was disappointed that she and Kate hadn’t bonded over the position they shared, but she wasn’t losing sleep over it.

Meghan Markle was desperate to bond with Kate Middleton
Still, in the beginning, Meghan was desperate to make a good impression with Kate. In her BBC engagement interview with Prince Harry, the LA-born star gushed over Kate. She also tried her best to make a thoughtful first impression.
For Kate’s 36th birthday in January 2018 just a few months prior to Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding, the duchesses spent some time together. “Meghan bought a present for the duchess,” Scobie and Durand write in Finding Freedom via Hello! “The soft leather Smythson notebook helped to break the ice, as did Meghan’s cooing over then 20-month-old Charlotte.”
In the end, the two women’s interactions would settle into distant politeness.
