THE perfect brow, does it even exist? Well, with hair and beauty experts predicting we will be getting back to full glam in 2021, we’d like to think so.
We know brows are one of the first features people see when looking at us and they can even enhance the eyes and give good proportion to our features.
According to brow connoisseur Nez Hasan, “brows softens and balances a look no matter what face shape you have, which is why its important to give the right proportion of definition and symmetry. As we all know eyebrows are sisters and not twins!”
She also recommends using the correct tools, using a pencil to fill in the gaps and even brow gel to keep them in place for the whole day.
But what is the best pencil to use? Well, it is important when choosing to look at the type of product that will work with your brows. Some use a pen type application, others have a powder effect and although brow trends come and go, it is always recommended to stick to a shape that is similar to your natural brow placement.
The key when applying is to draw in short strokes upwards and to work in a light gradual motion. You can also use a ‘spoolie,’ a wand brush to keep hairs firmly in place.
Gone are the days of one pencil that needed constant sharpening, now the market has an outstanding amount of trending products and styles to tame, define and shape your brows.
From powders to wands to pencils, we try out the latest eyebrow trends so you don’t have to.
Whatever shape your brow, we’ve got you covered!
IL MAKIAGE Brow Pen
- IL MAKIAGE Brow Pen, £20 – buy here
Want a brow pen that does what it says on the tin but at a pro-level? Then enter the ultra-slim, one-step brow pen by Il Makiage.
It has a thin tip for exact controlled precision so you can have a natural look or full fabulous brows in seconds!
Don’t be fooled by the very thin ‘pen’, it has a super narrow tip for a reason.
We found it manages to easily impart fine hair strokes and create a firm texture over the brows with a matte finish. We also tried it for spot-filling, to gently fill in brow gaps, which it also worked well with and didn’t make the brows look drawn on.
Nestled in an easy-to-use twist up applicator, we think it is one of the more precise brow products on the market and works well if you prefer to build up the brow shape.
While it is not entirely smudge-proof it is quite hard to budge which is perfect for those on the move applications and touch-ups.
It is also sweat-resistant so is perfect for if you want to look good at the gym too!
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, £23 – buy here
You may not know what a spoolie brush is but let us let you in on a little secret- it’s a brow fanatics best friend!
Used as a first step tool in a brow routine, it acts as a small light brush which you literally comb through the brows.
We used it to keep unruly hairs at bay and found it a great little tool to keep the flyaway hairs in place. With the other side you then fill, shape and maintain the brows.
We found it easy to glide on with a smooth finish and the fine tip helps to mimic the appearance of natural individual hairs.
We also found a quick run through of the brush afterwards helped smooth any stray hairs back in place.
Available in a spectrum of natural shades, this handy pencil is fuss free and makes even the sparsest of brows look full and fabulous in an instant.
Fans cited it as superb value, while one said the most important aspect was that the Brow Wiz pencil has the same size cap for both ends. It’s the small things in life!
Rimmel Microdefiner, £7.99 – buy here
One of the most popular google searches for beauty trends is HD brows, which stands for high definition brows.
Whilst it is hard to achieve the look without taking a lengthy trip to a beauty clinic, if you want results at home then this is the closest you’ll get.
To achieve the micro precision with the 1.5mm Ultra-fine tip, it is recommended to do brush like strokes upwards to make the brow look longer. We found this a simple and easy process to do as the tip is so thin, so you can get really precise but be careful with smudging when applying, a little goes a long way!
We loved that the pencil comes with a spoolie brush also which helps to shape the brows further. We are SO ready for our close-up!

We loved the cute brush wand, the sleek packaging and while it’s handy size has some fans saying they ran out too quickly, its easy to put in your pocket and top up at a moments notice.
With it’s creamy wax texture, we found this product was not too heavy when applying and it worked well if you want to thicken and shape gradually while adding natural layers.
Don’t be fooled into thinking this product is a mascara even though it has all the aesthetics of one!
The other added factor is the varying shades it comes in. If you don’t like the colour of your brows and don’t want to do a dye job on them then you’ll be pleased to know Brow Boy comes to the rescue. Infused with Oleic Acid, Lecithin, and Soluble Collagen it also helps condition and moisturize brows too. Healthy brows= Happy brows!

What is the best eyebrow pencil?
Eyebrow pencils come in all shapes and sizes so it is always best to do a little research prior. We are not all blessed with naturally thick or shaped brows, but fear not! The mighty eyebrow pencil can help create the illusion of beautiful brows in seconds.
There is the classic eyebrow pencil which you can sharpen yourself, or many now do a twist type pencil which saves you the hassle of resharpening. Then there are the pens, almost like a felt tip consistency, which normally have very fine nibs to do ultra-thin strokes mimicking hair on the brow. You also have your ‘spoolie’ wand-type gels and creams that run through the brows making them appear fuller and luscious.
Lastly, you can purchase ‘brow kits’ which do a combination of all three and we think are particularly useful for those days when your brows just will not behave!
Where is the best place to buy eyebrow pencils?
Eyebrow pencils can be brought online or in store and it’s worth checking out stockists such as Boots, Superdrug, Cult beauty, Beauty Pie and more!
How to choose an eyebrow pencil
Choosing an eyebrow pencil is no easy task but with a very simple hack or two, you can find the perfect one.
With pencils it is always best to go the exact shade of your brow or even better, one shade lighter. The reason being, the more you layer the darker it will go!
With brow gel, always go for the same shade as your brows as gel shows up even more so than pencil, even with a light coating.
The idea is to give the illusion of hair, so it is best to go for something that is natural to your normal brow colour.
Always look at the tip of the pencil and how thin it is, the thinner the nib, the clearer the stroke will appear- and while a steady hand is needed, practice makes perfect!
What is the best eyebrow pencil for no eyebrows?
For no eyebrows or sparse brows, there are many exceptional pencils and pens on the market. A gel works really well at building up the thickness of the brows you already have while it is best to also add a pencil in to the mix to create length.
Fill carefully in between the brows with short strokes. Then work at finer hair strokes- the more natural the better as this will enhance the brow well. One way to practice is by using the back of your hand or forearm to try really thin lines. Some may find using two very similar colours to your natural brow shape will also create depth and thickness to achieve a natural-looking brow.
How to shape eyebrows
The first thing to shape eyebrows is to tweeze any stray hairs that may be misbehaving!
But secondly you want to follow your natural brow shape upwards so use a brush or gel to create a natural style.
Some people like to do eyebrow mapping too where you start the edge of the brow at the same mark as the indent or dimple of your nose. You can use a pencil to do this or there are even kits online to help. The edge of the brow should then be filled in so it falls from outer edge of eye. The trick is always to work with your natural shape and enhance from there.
