Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have four children. On March 10, 1964, they welcomed their youngest son, Prince Edward. The 10th of March also happens to be the same day some very famous Hollywood stars were born.
Read on to find out which celebrities the Earl of Wessex shares a birthday with.
Prince Philip was present for Edward’s birth, but not his other children
When the queen gave birth to her first three children Prince Philip was not present. The Daily Mail noted that the Duke of Edinburgh, like most husbands of that era, wasn’t by his wife’s bedside when his eldest son, Prince Charles, arrived. Philip was playing squash with his private secretary at the time. Once he got the news, the duke sprinted to the delivery room and gave then-Princess Elizabeth a bouquet of flowers.
Philip wasn’t there when their daughter Princess Anne was born either. The Duke of Edinburgh was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-commander in the Royal Navy and given command of his own ship, the frigate HMS Magpie, the same day Anne came into the world.
After the birth of the Princess Royal, Elizabeth and her husband waited over a decade to have another child. Prince Philip again was not present when his second son, Prince Andrew, was delivered. But that changed when the queen gave birth to Edward.
Prince Edward, who was Queen Elizabeth’s lightest baby weighing 5lbs 7oz, was born at 8:20 p.m. in Buckingham Palace. Philip was in the room with the monarch to witness the birth. “The Duke of Edinburgh was actually holding his wife’s hand as their youngest was born,” Ingrid Seward wrote in her book My Husband and I: The Inside Story Of 70 Years Of Royal Marriage (per Town & Country). “Philip became the first royal father in modern history to witness the arrival of one of his children.”
Why Prince Edward has a different title than his siblings
When he married Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999, Edward was set to become the next Duke of Cambridge. However, he declined that title and instead requested Earl of Wessex after the character Lord Wessex from the film Shakespeare In Love.
“He liked the sound of it and asked the queen if he could have that instead,” a royal courtier previously told The Telegraph.
