Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex are parents once again. The couple recently welcomed their second child, a daughter named Lilibet. According to a royal expert, Lilibet’s arrival may help in “uniting” Harry and Meghan with the rest of the British royal family.
Meghan Markle gave birth to Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana on June 4
On June 6, 2021, news broke that Meghan and Harry had welcomed their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, two days earlier. The couple confirmed Lili’s birth by releasing a statement on their Archewell website that read:
“On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”
The statement also included that Lili was born at 11:40 a.m. in Santa Barbara, Calif., at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces. Also noted was that Meghan and Harry are now “on parental leave.”
Royal expert says the birth of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s daughter, Lilibet, may help ease tension between them and the royal family
Royal expert and author Tina Brown appeared on CBS This Morning on June 7, 2021, to discuss Lili’s arrival plus the state of Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the rest of the royal family. Brown, who is also a CBS News royal contributor, told host Gayle King that Lili’s birth just might be the thing to bring everyone together.
“It’s a great softening mechanism for the family right now, which has had a lot of friction and a lot of wounds,” Brown said. “There’s nothing more uniting than the advent of a new child. And this is going to be, I think, a helpful emollient.”
The arrival of the royal baby comes nearly three months after Harry and Meghan’s tell-all interview. During the primetime special with Oprah Winfrey the couple accused the royal family of racism and detailed their reasons for stepping back as senior royals.
Harry went back to England in April 2021 for his grandfather’s funeral where he briefly spoke to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. He’s also been open about his mental health and his own experience in the royal family on The Me You Can’t See.
Will Queen Elizabeth II fly to California to meet Lilibet Diana?
It’s unlikely the queen will travel to California to meet her newest great-grandchild. She doesn’t go to the U.S. often. The queen last visited the White House in 2007. Plus, the coronavirus is a factor meaning she’ll probably shy away from doing any non-essential travel. What’s more likely is that Meghan and Harry will fly to England with their kids in tow to introduce their newest addition to the rest of the royal family.
