Paul Burrell has said that Kate Middleton will play ‘peacekeeper’ and ‘holds the key’ in bringing Princes William and Harry together today.

Princess Diana’s former butler, 62,  said the pair will return to Kensington Palace and meet the Duchess of Cambridge after they reveal a statue of their mother on what would have been her 60th birthday.

He added that if the pair are unable to reconcile on this ‘poignant day’ then they ‘never will’, as he spoke to Adil Ray and Kate Garraway on ITVs Good Morning Britain from his home in Italy.

Prince Harry has flown into London from his home in California to mark his mother’s birthday. He will join William this afternoon  by unveiling a sculpture created in her honour by Ian Rank-Broadley and placed in the remodelled gardens of Kensington Palace packed with 4,000 of her favourite plants and flowers.

The brothers, who will arrive at the event together but give separate speeches, have been texting about England’s historic win over Germany after 18 months of frosty near-silence following a reported feud.

When asked by Adil if he thinks their mother will bring them together, Paul added: ‘Let’s hope so. And thank goodness 24 years after her death, we do have a tangible touchstone to her memory about family by the boys.

‘If this poignant day doesn’t do it, then nothing will. Because if they stand there in front of their mother’s image, just think and consider what she would have wanted.

‘They will go back into Kensington Palace after the ceremony, which will be very small and very quick.

‘Then they will meet up with Kate indoors, and I think Kate holds the key to this, I think she is the peacekeeper.

‘She’s the person that is going to pull these boys back together, there’s a lot of work to do, because a lot of things have been said. She’s the answer because she’s standing in between both of them and seeing this unfold.

‘The boys spent their grieving years together, they became closer and closer, and then suddenly there was this massive riff that grew between them, so Kate has witnessed this firsthand.

‘She knows that William he wants this to work out those boys should be stood together, Their mother would want them to stand together.

‘Her ideal idea was that Harry would support William when he came to the throne.

‘It was his job to look after his brother, and they would be there together, helping each other.

‘Don’t forget Diana was a great monarchist she supported the Queen and Prince Philip, and she loved the institution into which the boys were born.

‘She was very proud of her boys being members of the royal family, and she would want them to continue that way I believe there will be a role for Harry in the future when William becomes King.

Also on the show was royal expert and biographer Angela Levin, who said that she didn’t think the brothers would be able to find common ground.

People look at tributes placed on the gates of Kensington Palace in London ahead of her statue unveiling today

‘My view is that Prince Harry has decided over some time away and that’s even before that he’s had absolutely enough of being the spare the second one, the one who always has to pick up the pieces as it were.

‘I think he’s established himself as the voice and the feeling of his mother.

‘William is pragmatic he loves his mother just the same, but he’s trying to incorporate into his life, he said, I want this to make me not break me.

‘Harry has been very very unkind saying that both Prince William and Prince Charles, are stuck and you know it’s demeaning that whole issue is. He wants to take on Diana’s role and be like her in the future.

‘I’m sorry to be harsh because I spent over a year with Prince Harry I thought he was wonderful. I think he’s completely changed. I think he’s sees that he has her legacy. I don’t think it’s very nice to describe your father was a lousy parent’.
