My 17-year-old girlfriend is pregnant and we are worried how our families will react

DEAR DEIDRE: MY girlfriend is pregnant and I feel terrible about the shame this might bring to her and her family.

We are both 17 and met last year at school. I am very much in love with her.

We dated for ages before we had sex and, when it finally happened, I hadn’t got a condom but didn’t think she would get pregnant.

Now she has found out she is pregnant, she is happy about it and says she wants to keep the baby.

I feel terrible it’s happened and very guilty.

I have no idea how her family will react.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m afraid having sex without using protection always risks pregnancy – and these days having sex itself risks transmitting coronavirus.

Tell your girlfriend you will go with her to tell her family.

You are both very young to be parents and I wonder if she really understood how much a baby will change her life.

My e-leaflet Unplanned Pregnancy spells out the options and where she can turn for further help.
