While the 2022 Golden Globes celebration (or lack thereof) has received little attention, one winner is making headlines with her historic achievement. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez has just become the first transgender woman to win a Golden Globe.
MJ took home the Best Actress in a TV Drama Award for her role as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in the critically acclaimed FX show Pose. The actress documented her win on Instagram writing, "OMG OMGGG!!!! @goldenglobes Wow! You talking about sickening birthday present!"
She continued in her caption, acknowledging that her win would open the door for so many others like her. "This is the door that is going to Open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible. They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS. To my young LGBTQAI babies WE ARE HERE the door is now open now reach the stars!!!!!"
She ended her post by giving her fellow nominees a shoutout. "To the nominees we are Queens. I'm so happy to share space with you! Each and every last one of you women are phenomenal."
MJ also celebrated the win with an IG Live, on which she dedicated her win to the "many multi, beautiful colors of the rainbow around the freakin' world."
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has notoriously lacked diversity in their nominations over the years, as well as in their organization, which has led to a boycott of the 2022 ceremony. NBC announced in May 2021 that they would not be broadcasting the 2022 Globes. Instead, there would be a private event, and the results would be announced via Twitter, per The Hollywood Reporter. West Side Story, Succession, and Power of the Dog, were among the big winners last night.
