Martin Lewis explains how to cut mobile phone bill by £575 with two texts

A fan of Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has revealed how you could save hundreds of pounds on your phone bill by sending two simple texts.

The financial guru shared his advice on his ITV Martin Lewis Money Show Live last week.

The show usually offers savvy Brits advice on all-things money related, from bills to holidays and credit cards to mortgages.

It comes as major mobile phone networks and broadband providers prepare to start hiking their prices in the next couple of months.

Martin said that more than 9million people are still paying monthly for a phone contract that has already ended.

On the show he said: “Last week I told you broadband and mobile bills are going up by 14% in April for most of the big firms. What I want you to do first is I want you to check if you’re out of contract. Over 9million of you are and are overpaying.”

The first text to send is to INFO on 85075. For most people this will send back a message that explains how long you have left in your contract and if there’s any termination fees to cancel it.

If there are fees, it’s better off that you stay in the contract.

But Martin added: “If you’re out of contract there are actually some of you – outrageously and this should not be allowed – who got a contract with a handset and once you paid the handset off, they keep the price at the same level so you’re still paying with the with-handset price, even if you’re not longer using it.”

He revealed some bargain contracts, costing only £4 before giving another top tip that will save so much time.

The second text means that you can keep your current number and bring that with you to another network that you choose.

He said: “If you want to keep your number, text PAC to 65075 on your old phone, they will send you your PAC code and you can use this with your new provider as a way to keep your old number.

“Of course you could use this as a way to haggle with your existing provider.”

A viewer, known only as Carole, shared her success of the tip, saying: “I sent INFO to 85075 as advised by you, my current provider contacted me and I’m now on a SIM-only deal.

“I have unlimited calls and texts, 15GB of data, free EU roaming – and I keep my own number – for just £8 a month, saving £575 a year.”

Martin said: “I’m glad to hear this worked at home. You should try it and then, if you know you’re free to leave, it means you’re out of contract – either you can try and see what your provider’s cheapest deal is, haggle with them, or go on a comparison website and see what the cheapest you can get is.

“Just look at the size of the savings. So many people stay on high rates and you can slash it by 70% or 80%.”
