We don’t always have the time to express our thankfulness for family and friends, which makes Thanksgiving all the more special a holiday. Make Thanksgiving last all year long by turning that gratitude into a tangible keepsake for your loved ones to cherish.
Phoenix-based blogger, author and artist Kathy Cano-Murillo of CraftyChica.com shares her ideal family craft project: A beautiful Thanksgiving plate, customized with personal expressions of gratitude.
You can surprise your loved ones with a completed plate on Thanksgiving Day, or else make a fun family activity out of making them together. Only a few supplies are needed for this project.
Supplies:
Plain white porcelain plates
Permanent markers, or ceramic paint markers
Alcohol pads
Oven
Before you begin
Wipe the plate with an alcohol pad to clean it and prepare the glazed surface for the permanent ink.
Start with your name
Each person will start by writing his or her own name on the rim of the plate in a favorite color of permanent ink.
Pass the plates
After everyone has labeled their plates, pass the plates to the right. Choose another marker color and write all the things you are thankful for about that person.
If you want to be able to eat off the plates, be sure to decorate only the rim, and not the center or any place where food will touch. If you make a mistake, wipe it off with an alcohol pad.
Continue to pass the plates around the table until your plate returns to you, now covered with statements of gratitude from each member of the family.
Finishing up
Place the plate on a cookie sheet in the oven.
Set the oven for 350F and let it heat up while the plates are inside (do not preheat).
Bake for 45 minutes.
Let the plates completely cool before removing from oven.
Do not put these customized plates in the dishwasher – hand-wash them only.
