I want to leave my abusive wife but I worry no one will believe my reasoning

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE recently retired and it’s made me realise I need to make a decision about my abusive marriage.

I’m 68 and my wife is 66. Over the years she has limited my contact with my family and friends.

I allowed this for a quiet life, or she’d make things so difficult.

We have a son and a daughter who are both grown up and I have a good relationship with both.

She’ll be fine for days, but then something triggers her and she gets so angry and verbally abusive, she scares me.

Yet all her friends and family think I am the issue as she complains about how disorganised I am.

I’ve had a miserable life with her but I’m worried no one will believe me that I have good reason to leave.

You do not have to prove you have good reason to anyone else.

You have been miserable for too long and need to put yourself first.

It would help you to see a counsellor to work out how you’d like to proceed.
