I don’t know how to tell my friend that I tried to save his brother’s life but couldn’t – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: A FEW weeks ago I was called out to a motorway collision as part of my job with the fire service. I am 31.

The guy died before we could free him from the wreckage. It was very sad but I saw it as part of my professional work.

Later, I learned that he was the brother of a friend of mine, and only 23 years old.

I’ve been wanting to tell my friend and his parents what happened, and about this man’s last moments, but I’m not sure whether that would be a good idea.

DEIDRE SAYS: That must have been harrowing but I worry you could give them details that would haunt them forever.

Would you honestly be able to reassure them this man’s end was in any way peaceful?

Talk it over first with your senior officer. There may be confidentiality issues.

It may also be that this has affected you more than you realised and you need to offload.
