Sex, drugs and fashion abound in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming limited series “Halston,” executive-produced by Ryan Murphy and starring Ewan McGregor as the titular designer.
Released on Monday, the clip opens with Halston proclaiming, “I have a vision: I’m going to change the face of American fashion.”
Elsewhere in the clip, set to Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence,” we see the designer crafting his signature ultra-suede coats and draped gowns, partying hard at Studio 54, grappling for control of his namesake label and descending into drug addiction.
The trailer also gives eager fans a glimpse at the rest of the “Halston” cast, including Krysta Rodriguez as Liza Minnelli, Rebecca Dayan as Elsa Peretti and Gian Franco Rodriguez as Victor Hugo.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, series creator and director Dan Minahan had been trying to turn Halston’s life into a project for nearly 20 years; it was Murphy’s involvement that got the series “fast-tracked into production.”
Leading man McGregor, 50, even taught himself to sew to portray the man whose luxe creations defined 1970s style.
“He worked with our costume designer to learn how to drape and cut and pin,” Minahan told THR. “When you see him make the dresses in the show, he’s literally cutting the fabric, pinning it and making it.”
Said McGregor of slipping into the role of the famously controlling fashion force, “I was excited to play that. To go to the extremes of his temper. But behind it all — this drive, this creative drive. And this desire to be grand. Everything had to be the best.”
“Halston” hits Netflix on May 14.
