When it comes to the royal family, there are always rumors flying around. Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married, media outlets have been reporting that there has been a rift between Prince Harry and his brother, Prince William. But even more so, there have been reports that Markle and Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, don’t get along.
These rumors were only intensified when Markle and Prince Harry announced that they were splitting the royal household. But could the split actually be the thing that has mended the royal family’s relationship?
What was the royal split?
While the announcement of a royal split may have seemed drastic, it actually was a natural progression.
“They have always been different, they are very different characters,” a source told People of Prince William and Prince Harry. “They drew great comfort from each other when their mother died, and as they’ve grown up together. But they need to be separate. Now Meghan has arrived it is the right time to make that break.”
The split just meant that the royal brothers would have separate offices and could each focus on their individual interests.
“The arrival of Meghan has changed the dynamic of the relationship in a fairly significant way,” royals author Sally Bedell Smith told the outlet. “It is inevitable and practical because it gives Harry and Meghan some freedom to build up their own collection of interests and charities.”
After the split, Markle and Prince Harry moved from Kensington Palace, where Prince William’s family lives, to Frogmore Cottage at Windsor. This put about 25 miles worth of distance between the two families.
Did the split actually help the relationship?
You know the saying “distance makes the heart grow fonder?” That may be the case when it comes to this royal foursome.
Royal sources told People that the distance is “allowing them more time to be like family.”
“There is a sense of [Meghan and Kate’s] relationship strengthening.”
All of the space has also helped them each focus on their individual roles within the royal hierarchy.
“They all know what’s at stake, and William and Harry know that their grandmother [Queen Elizabeth] in particular needs them to be on the same page,” sources continued.
The royals are also going out of their way to put feud rumors to bed.
“There have been two major circumstances, which are very calculated and deliberate efforts to try and stem these rumors about a feud between the foursome,” royal expert Katie Nicholl recently told Entertainment Tonight. “We saw it at the polo match where William and Harry were obviously playing together. We hadn’t expected the duchesses to turn up with their children. The fact that they did is a wonderful treat for royal watchers, but I think those candid pictures were quite deliberately intended to snuff out those rumors of the feud between the foursome. And you saw them all very close, very happy, very comfortable with each other.”
In addition to the polo match, Middleton, Markle, and Middleton’s sister, Pippa Middleton, all went to Serena Williams’ Wimbledon match together last weekend.
“We saw Kate and Meghan in the royal box getting along, chatting to each other, looking very much like friends,” Nicholl said. “To have had the tennis [outing] so soon afterward, and obviously the two duchesses being so close together and so comfortable in each other’s company, yes, for the time being, you’re not going to be reading stories of a feud.”
