David Beckham is almost as famous for his daring hairstyles as for his skills on the soccer field. The footballer has experimented with a bleached-blonde ‘do, long locks and cornrows — and at one point, he even considered a perm.
“There was this footballer at Manchester United called Clayton Blackmore — he had it quite short on top, but then permed and long in the back, and I wanted that done,” Beckham, 43, told Into the Gloss.
It was Beckham’s mother, a hairstylist who cut his hair until he was 13 years old, who vetoed the style. “Mum said no, which was probably good.”
Though Becks has tried it all, including buzz cuts, ponytails and headbands, he recalled that his mohawk was one of his most experimental — and polarizing — looks. “It felt like an era when people didn’t really take risks,” he said. “Which is probably why my mohawk didn’t go over all that well, I suppose. People didn’t really accept that one. But that’s probably the one people talked about the most. Other than the cornrows…”
Continued the soccer superstar, “I always think, at the time, that things are great and that they look good. Twenty years on, when I look back at certain things — maybe the cornrows — I was pushing it a little bit. But at the time, it felt right,” he recalled.
Once known for having a new look every month, Becks is now planning to stick with his current style. “I’m keeping [this haircut] for now,” he said. “You know, I’m 43 years old and I can’t do what I used to do when I was 23!”
