Cut the cost of your Christmas food bill by making use of your freezer — plus win £15,000 in our raffle

Don’t panic. Your freezer can be your festive saviour. Here’s how.

  • Brrr-illiant bargains. Hit the “reduced” section every day this week. Supermarkets will be clearing shelf space for all the Christmas dinner stock.
Look out for bargain veg you could freeze then use in your Christmas dinner.
One saver emailed me this week saying they had picked up two steaks for just 24p, down from £3.50. This will help prevent you needing late midweek top-ups.
  • Festive prep. Nab some cheap foods, such as dried pasta, to bulk out dinners. When cooking, make extra batches. Pop them in the freezer in individual portions for instant ready-meals. That could save you £3.50 on, say, Tesco Finest Mac & Cheese.
  • Christmas cuts. There is very little difference in quality between fresh produce and frozen. But frozen is much cheaper.
With fresh food now on shelves for the big day, expect to see serious reductions on frozen veg.
A frozen turkey is cheaper too, especially if you are cooking for just a few people. Iceland does a frozen turkey joint for £3 that serves two, while Asda’s cheapest fresh, small turkey is £13. So you would save £10 at Iceland.
  • Leftover heaven. Anything left after dinner can be put to good use for healthy January meals.
Pop your uneaten veg into freezer bags in small portions. Then, in the new year, defrost one and blend it to make a pasta sauce or pesto. That could save you £1.45 on Morrisons’ Roast Vegetable Pasta Sauce.
  • PRICES correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
