A 9-year-old boy unaccompanied on a Virgin Airlines flight was forced to sleep in an airport lounge overnight when his plane was diverted, according to reports.
The boy, John Meredith, was left stranded at an airport in Melbourne, Australia, after weather disrupted his Virgin Australia flight Thursday night and the airline failed to find accommodations for him, USA Today reported.
His mom, Kate Meredith, is now calling out the airline after learning her son, who recently underwent heart surgery, slept on the airport lounge floor, according to News.com.au.
She said her son was flying solo to meet his grandparents, who were waiting at another airport for his arrival.
“My parents were sitting in an empty airport,” the mom told News.com.au. “I got in touch with them and told them, and they went to the desk and got it confirmed.”
The airline apologized and said they couldn’t find hotel rooms to accommodate the passengers because of the Grand Prix racing championship held in Melbourne.
“In times of weather disruption, we do our best to accommodate guests onto other flights or provide accommodation when their flights have been diverted,” said a Virgin spokesman in a statement to News.com.au. “We take the utmost care when transporting unaccompanied minors and aim to ensure their nominated guardians are aware of any developments as they arise. In this instance, our ground crew supervised the child and made him as comfortable as possible in a room in our Melbourne Airport Lounge ahead of his flight the following morning.”
