WITH birthday parties smaller and socially distanced, balloon garlands are just the ticket to add some much-needed cheer.
Pictures of them fill our Instagram feeds, and they are popular with the stars too, including Stacey Solomon.
But you don’t need to fork out a fortune to have one of your own.
I spoke to Sarah Allsop, creative manager at celebration shop Party Delights, to get her tips on how to DIY your own garland.
Sarah says: “To create an impressive-looking arch you will need to blow up around 20-30 balloons. Make sure they vary in size.”
My tip: Instead of paying out for a balloon pump, just blow the balloons up yourself — ask the kids to help, too.
You can order a pack of Yiran 30 white and gold balloons with confetti for £2.99 on amazon.co.uk. That’s super cheap.
STRING AND BEAR IT
Sarah says: “After the balloons are blown up, thread the larger balloon knots through balloon tape. Leave about 30cm at either end for hanging.
“Space them out and mix up the colours. Then slot in some smaller balloons to fill any gaps.”
My tip: Instead of buying balloon tape, use string.
A roll of balloon tape costs £4.99 at partydelights.co.uk but a 40m ball of cotton string will set you back just £1.59.
TAPE TO IT
Sarah says: “Use balloon glue dots to stick the remaining balloons on the garland for added effect.”
My tip: You can get a pack of 250 glue dots from The Works for £2, or you can get 300 for £3 at Hobbycraft. I know which I’d choose.
HOOKED ON YOU
Sarah says: “Finally, attach your finished garland to the wall using command hooks.”
My tip: An alternative to splashing out around £3.50 a pair on command hooks is to use some leftover string to tie your garland in place.
Not only will you be saving cash but it can be kinder to your walls, too.
