Alexis Ohanian Says This 'Simple Sunday Tradition' Makes His Marriage to Serena Williams Work

Alexis Ohanian is spilling secrets about his relationship with wife Serena Williams.

The Reddit founder, who shares 16-month-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. with Williams, penned a letter for Glamour published on Valentine’s Day detailing the ways in which he keeps their romance alive.

Though Ohanian, 35, has become known for his self-described “extravagant” romantic gestures — including flying Williams to Italy when she was craving Italian food — it’s “the simpler things that are the most important,” Ohanian wrote.

“You have to show up. You have to be supportive,” he said. “These are the things that matter.”

Ohanian credits his parents with a lot of what he’s learned about partnership and relationships (“I got the cheat code for partnership early on,” he joked).

The best move? His “simple Sunday tradition” that he says sums it all up: making pancakes.

“Growing up, my dad would make pancakes every Sunday. They were delicious, but it wasn’t just about the food. It was about being together,” Ohanian recalled. “So on Sunday mornings, I make breakfast for the family and it doesn’t cost me a thing, except for gluten-free flour (I had to modify Dad’s recipe a bit), some eggs, almond milk, a secret ingredient, and berries (Olympia loves raspberries).”

“There are no phones, just conversation. And we’ll spend the day together lounging around the house, or playing hide-and-seek, or going for a swim in the pool,” Ohanian added. “Just being a family on those days means so much to both of us.”

Williams and Ohanian wed in November 2017 after beginning to date in 2015.

In January, the tennis superstar talked about what made their relationship click in the beginning, explaining to Allure that Ohanian always respected and encouraged her success.

“Oprah said, ‘Never let anyone dim your light.’ That really stuck with me,” Williams recalled of advice she got from Winfrey. “Alexis doesn’t dim my light. He doesn’t try to dim my light. He puts me in the light, even if I don’t want to be. He pushes me to further points I never thought about.”

“It always was something that I could see in some relationships — my light would be dimmer. Now I feel like I can shine really bright and still do everything that I want to do.”
