Home and Away’s Ray Meagher has revealed that his mind has occasionally ‘wandered into retirement.’
The soap legend – who portrays Alf Stewart in the Australian soap – admitted that he thinks about potentially leaving his iconic role of 33 years, but then often reconsiders.
‘My mind is wondering a bit at the moment,’ Ray said on Nova 96.9 radio show Fitzy and Wippa. ‘Occasionally it wanders into retirement but then quickly turns around and thinks: “Well what are you going to do there?”
The soap star underwent triple bypass surgery in 2019, and revealed that he was only supposed to have a double bypass, but the surgeon decided to do a
‘Well they opened me up but I thought I’d have a double bypass, the doctor came in a couple of nights later, splattered in blood, he’d had a crack in a few other people.
‘I said: “How’d it go, are both in tubes tied up alright?” He said: “What do you mean both, you had a triple.”
“While he was in there he saw something that looked a bit ordinary so we
thought why not, by two get one free.’
Ray, 76, revealed last year that he has ‘never been fitter’ after an operation, which saw him have a stent fitted to fix a blockage in his heart.
‘It’s all done now, and I’m sure everybody played their part,’ he said at the time.
‘I’ve never been fitter and have been working long days on Home and
‘We’ve been trying to catch-up on what we dropped in the nine weeks we were closed down during Covid’.
Ray’s character Alf features in upcoming scenes of the Channel 5 soap, when Roo persuades him to meet with a journalist – who is more interested when they mention John and his dealings with Susie!
