Gardening expert Carol Klein will be returning to our screens tonight for her second series on Channel 5. Carol will be showing keen gardeners what they can do with their outdoor space in spring from her own cottage garden in Devon. The show aims to help complete novices to more experienced gardeners gain skills and inspiration for their own gardens.

Carol will be showing viewers how to divide snowdrops and primroses to increase their number and how to pollinate hellebores.

She will also be looking at growing potatoes, salaams and herbs in her vegetable garden and greenhouse.

Ahead of the new series, Carol has shared her top tips for spring.

Equipment

Carol said you don’t need a lot of equipment to get out in the garden, and that a lot of the show will have a recycling theme.

For Carol, the basics can last a lifetime.

She added: “Get a couple of little hand tools – a trowel and a little hand fork.

“I have still got my mum’s – it came from Woolies and it must be about 60 years old.

“Get a spade if you can find one, some decent compost and, if you have got an established garden, you need some good secateurs.

“We will be doing some pruning in the first programme!”

Seeds

The gardening expert said now is the time to start sowing seeds.

The great thing about seeds as opposed to buying plants is they’re more affordable.

Carol said: “Seeds are cheap and when you think what you pay for a packet of lettuce seed and what you will get out of it sowing right through the year, it is a bargain and you know what is in it and on it!”

Spring displays

A spring display planted in a trough or clay pot is a simple but effective way to add more excitement to your outside space.

Carol recommended growing alpines which “come into their own in spring”.

She also said they’re not difficult to grow and are “straightforward and easy”.

The gardening expert added: “I will be planting mine in a big stone trough, but you don’t need that.

“It is great to put them into something portable like a big clay pot because if it is portable you can actually put it under your nose.”

Bulbs

Carol recommended planting lily bulbs at this time of year.

She said you can either plant them in the garden directly or in pots.

She added: “We will probably be growing Lilium Regale, the regal lily, because it is easy and straightforward, but there is a vast array that people can choose from.”

Gardening with Carol Klein starts 7pm, Thursday 29th April on Channel 5
