Aldi often changes and updates its food range to meet customer demands. The discount supermarket has recently introduced new plant-based products to its shelves, including a product described as “vegan bacon”.

However, the item, described on the packaging as “No Pork Steaky Bacon Rashers” has sparked debate among customers.

The product is “made with pea protein” and is part of Aldi’s Plant Menu range.

Aldi posted a picture of the product on its Facebook page last week, saying: “Who said vegan needed to be boring (and expensive)?

“Not us. In store now!”

The post quickly garnered more than 7,000 like and over 10,000 comments.

Some customers were enraged by the news of the product, while others were impressed by it.

Many of the shoppers belonging to the former category were angry because of the item’s name.

James Kitts commented: “Call it something else. Bacon is a cut of meat. Simples.”

Tracy Harley wrote: “Impossible. Bacon is meat. Rename it.”

David Thorp said: “If I wanted to eat radioactive cardboard, I’d coat my Amazon parcel boxes in uranium.”

Joanne Duxbury added: “This is so wrong. I presume it has similar ingredients to the sausages. Just full of rubbish like soya that is so inflammatory to our bodies.”

Dawn Williams said: “Here we go again the vegans who secretly want to eat meat. Why on earth do they want something that looks like meat if they’re so against eating it.”

However, some customers praised Aldi for launching a new vegan product.

Rebecca Pipe wrote: “Fantastic to see a non-soya alternative. I wonder if manufacturers realise how many people are put off by soya in their foods. Well done.”

Swain Therese commented: “So pleased Aldi are stocking more vegan products. Thank you.”

Donna Maria added: “This vegan product looks good, healthy, and affordable. Thank you.”

Others claimed they had already bought the product and were happy with it.

Jenny Lawro said: “I had this at lunchtime today. It was pretty tasty.”

Lynette Woodfield wrote: “It’s delicious. Had it in my sandwich for lunch today.”

The pack of 10 No Pork Streaky Bacon Rashers cost £2.19 and are available to buy in Aldi stores now.
