Another day, another fast food meal at the White House.
On Monday, athletes from North Dakota State University got served a massive fast food spread during their visit to the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue — over one month after the Clemson Tigers found the same meal waiting for them.
President Donald Trump explained the choice of meal to his guests, who were in town to celebrate winning the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, by saying he could have offered the players and coaches food prepared by White House chefs but, “I know you people,” according to reporters in the room. The remark got a laugh from the players.
Addressing how he had offered up a similar meal to the Tigers during their visit in January, which occurred during the government shutdown, Trump remarked, “We like American companies.”
The meal consisted of items from Chick-Fil-A, as well as Big Macs and fries from McDonald’s. As noted by the Washington Post, despite all of the fast food offerings, the team did go on to have lunch at the Capitol.
The team’s visit with Trump began at 12:17 p.m., according to reporters in attendance, as the president entered alongside Vice President Mike Pence, and started shaking hands with the football players.
“You should all be incredibly proud,” he said, before giving a special shout out to the team’s quarterback, Easton Stick, who was named Most Outstanding Player.
Praising the player, Trump said he had “the look” of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who has a well-documented friendship with the president.
“Somebody better draft him, he’s going to be a rich guy,” Trump added.
During the visit, Stick also presented Trump, the 45th President of the United States, with a custom “45” jersey.
In January, with the White House kitchen staff furloughed due to the grinding shutdown of the federal government, the president served a similar meal to the Clemson University football team.
“Because of the shutdown, you know we have the great Clemson team with us, the national champions. So we went out and we ordered American fast food, paid for by me,” Trump said, according to CNN. “Lots of hamburgers, lots of pizza. … We have some very large people that like eating. So I think we’re going to have a little fun.”
Added deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley to CNN in a statement: “The President wanted to host a fun event to celebrate the College Football National Champion Clemson Tigers. Because the Democrats refuse to negotiate on border security, much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed, so the President is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone’s favorite fast foods.”
Although Trump’s selection of food options were ridiculed online, the president seemed happy with how things turned out.
He called the smorgasbord “great American food,” CNN reported. “If it’s American, I like it,” he said. “It’s all American stuff.”
Later, Trump — who has claimed in the past to be a big fan of fast food himself — told the Clemson team that he had bought “1,000” food items, Time reported. “We have Big Macs, we have Quarter Pounders with cheese, we have everything that I like, that you like,” he said. “And I know no matter what we did, there’s nothing you could have that’s better than that.”
