Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson got married on 23 July 1986, after announcing their engagement in March of the same year. The Queen’s second-oldest son, Andrew, proposed to Sarah with a magical looking engagement ring. It has a spectacular ruby stone and has a rather similar design to the Duchess of Cambridge’s iconic sapphire ring, previously owned by Princess Diana.

When asked about the ring in their first official interview as a couple, Sarah described it as “stunning” and “red”.

The Duchess of York’s engagement ring is one of the most recognisable royal jewels, as it features a huge Burmese ruby surrounded by ten glittering diamonds.

The stones form a flower pattern which is also known as a cluster ring.

The precious gems are arranged on a yellow gold band and the gorgeous colours are very attention-grabbing.

Prince Andrew said on the ring: “We came to the mutual conclusion that red was probably the best colour for Sarah.

“That’s how we came to the choice of the ruby.

“The extra bits around the outside, we wanted something that was slightly unconventional.”

The stunning ring is believed to have been crafted by British jewellery house, Garrard, the same place that made Princess Diana’s iconic sapphire piece, as well as Sophie Countess of Wessex’s dazzling ring.

At the time, Sarah’s beloved ring cost around £25,000, but inflation and the story behind the ring now means it could be valued in the region of £70,000.

Royal fans adore Sarah Ferguson’s ring, which is not always given as much attention as other royal ladies, such as Kate Middleton or Meghan Markle.

A royal fan, Sharon McCallum, wrote on Facebook: “To me, the prettiest ring is the ring Andrew gave to Sarah.

“It is a stunning ring, I am not at all a fan of fancy glittery jewellery, but Sarah’s ring really impressed me.”

Just four months after their engagement, the couple wed at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986.

After becoming the Duke and Duchess of York, they shared “one hell of a kiss”, as Oprah Winfrey once said, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

At this point, she gave royal fans another glimpse of her dazzling ruby ring.

If royal fans love the style of Sarah Ferguson’s ring, they can consider a gorgeous dupe for a fraction of the price from Angara for just £1,304.

It is a ruby engagement ring and looks just like the Duchess of York’s ring from 1986.

Prince Andrew and Sarah separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, but the Duchess only stopped wearing the precious jewel in 2003, 11 years after separating.

Sarah did also keep her wedding day tiara, which was believed to be a present from the Queen and the late Duke of Edinburgh.

When Princess Eugenie got engaged to Jack Brooksbank in 2018, she showed off the most gorgeous cluster-shaped ring containing a padparadscha sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

Many royal commentators believed this to be a homage to her mother’s engagement ring, as it looks incredibly similar.

Although it looks rather similar to her mother’s engagement ring, it is not the exact one, and Princess Beatrice’s eye-catching ring from Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi is a completely different design altogether.
