PEOPLE are just realising the true meaning behind a popular nursery rhyme, and it’s darker than we ever imagined.
A clever lady has revealed that the childhood rhyme It’s Raining, It’s Pouring isn’t about the weather at all, and it’s blown our minds.
The woman, who posts online as Stupid Little Genius, unpacked the unpleasant truth and told everyone the real story.
“Everyone knows this one, but do you know what it means?” she asked.
The woman filmed a page of her book, covered in illustrated droplets of rain.
She sang: “It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring, he went to bed and bumped his head and couldn’t get up in the morning.”

The rhyme is about a man – but who is it?
“Although it doesn’t describe any specific person, it does tell us a cautionary tale,” she explained.
Despite the rhyme describing a downpour, it has nothing to do with the rain at all.
“In actual fact, the old man liked a good drink and ‘it’s raining and pouring’ refers to the alcoholic drinks being poured very liberally – like it’s raining cocktails and shots,” she said.

So the rhyme isn’t about rain, it’s about a very drunk man.
“That’s right,” she said. “The old man was drunk, very drunk.
“After drinking so much that he couldn’t stay awake, he started nodding off and snoring.
“So he decided ‘it’s time to sleep it off’.
“But by this point he was so inebriated he probably couldn’t even walk in a straight line.
“So when he went to bed he stumbled, fell or otherwise drunkenly bumped his head.
“And that must’ve been some bump because he couldn’t get up in the morning.”
The reason the man couldn’t get up in the morning wasn’t because of a raging hangover – the truth was much, much worse.
“Well, he was dead,” the woman explained.
“That’s right, most experts agree that the man never got up again because he suffered from a major head trauma.
“Just what did he crack his head on?”
The video, posted on TikTok, has gone viral and hundreds of people have shared their surprise, along with their thoughts behind the strange rhyme.
One user said: “I took it as his wife hit him on his head because of his snoring.”
A second replied: “That’s it, ruin my childhood memories.”
