People up and down the country went a little bit crazy over bakery Greggs’ vegan sausage rolls last week.
While non-meat eaters were delighted by the news, others (we’re looking at you Piers Morgan) were less than impressed.
The sausage rolls sold out in several stores as people tested if they actually tasted like the original delicious treat, resulting in lots of very disappointed vegans.
But now, some people have seen an opportunity and are SELLING the sausage rolls on eBay for as much as £12.50. Yes, really.
A number of units have appeared on the online auction site, offering the "rare" snacks still in the original packaging.
And more worrying, lots of people are actually bidding for them, with one already attracting 15 offers.
The Quorn-stuffed sausage rolls will be available in 950 of Greggs’ 1,900 stores across the UK for £1.
Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: "Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.
"It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary."
Amid all the excitement, we sent two of our team to taste the vegan sausage rolls to see what they thought.
This is what meat-eater Laura Connor and vegetarian Amanda Evans thought.
Meat-eater: I have no idea why Piers Morgan felt the need to throw up after eating this – it’s yummy. The Quorn-filled puff pastry is melt-in-the-mouth and the spicy filling hits the spot, just like the meat version.
Vegetarian: According to staff at Greggs, customers have been going “crazy” for the new, no-meat roll since they introduced it last Thursday. Mine was steaming hot and fresh out of the oven.
I liked the taste, and the consistency was appealing. Now I know what all the hype is about with their 96 layers of puff pastry.
