Melissa Joan Hart has shared her heartbreaking proximity to the Nashville school shooting, revealing how she helped young children ‘escape’ the massacre.
The Sabrina The Teenage Witch actress explained how she now lives in the Tennessee city with her husband, Mark Wilkerson, and their three sons, Mason, 17, Braydon, 15, and Tucker, 10.
On Monday morning, assailant Audrey Hale, 28, broke into the private Christian institute The Covenant School and opened fire, shooting and killing six people, including three children.
Melissa, 46, has since revealed how she became caught up in the chaos after spotting a group of young children running through woods desperately trying to escape the scene.
Her children attend a school right next to The Covenant but were not in attendance that day.
In an emotional Instagram video posted on Tuesday, the TV star said: ‘We moved here from Connecticut where we were in school a little ways down from Sandy Hook, so this is our second experience with a school shooting with our kids being in close proximity. Luckily we are all okay.
‘My husband and I were on our way to school for conferences. Luckily our kids weren’t in today.’
Breaking down in tears, she added: ‘We helped a class of Kindergartners across a busy highway. They were climbing out of the woods, they were trying to escape a shooter situation at their school. So we helped all these tiny little kids cross the road and get their teachers over there.’
‘We helped a mum reunite with her children and I just … I don’t know what to say. Enough is enough. Just pray, pray for the families,’ she added.
In the caption, Melissa explained that it felt ‘too raw’ to post on the day of the incident, hence why she shared her story the following day.
Police in Tennessee confirmed the gun woman, Hale, was shot dead by officers on the scene by 10.27am on Monday.
‘Two MNPD officers who entered the building and went to the sounds of gunfire engaged the shooter on the second floor and fatally shot her,’ tweeted the police department in the afternoon.
The six victims have since been identified as Cynthia Peak, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Michael Hill, 61. The children, all aged nine, have been named as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney.
