Whether you only have to think of a push-up to break out in a sweat or whether you’re a pro, they could be more important than you think.
As well as being generally good for your health and fitness , a simple (ish) push-up test could potentially save your life.
Because the number indicates a lot about the state of your health if you’re a man.
So how many push-ups do you think you could do in a row? Ten? Twenty? One hundred maybe (in which case, well done you)?
What you should be aiming for is 40 push-ups in a row. Not ten then a short break while your life flashes before your very eyes, but 40 consecutive push-ups.
According to new research, men who can do more than 40 push-ups in a row have a 96 per cent lower risk of heart disease than those who struggle to do 10.
The Harvard study says that demonstrating to your doctor how many push-ups you’re capable of could even be a more accurate indication of heart disease and strokes than the treadmill tests traditionally used.
"Surprisingly, push-up capacity was more strongly associated with cardiovascular disease risk than the results of submaximal treadmill tests," lead author Dr Justin Yang, occupational medicine resident at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, explained.
To arrive at these findings, 1104 active male firefighters between the ages of 21 and 66 had their health data analysed over a decade.
"Participants able to complete more than 40 push-ups were associated with a significantly lower risk of incident CVD event risk compared with those completing fewer than 10 push-ups," the study reveals.
