Futurama voice star drops major tease for Fry and Leela romance in reboot

Throughout the history of TV, there have been several will-they, won’t-they couples who have stood the test and time – Ross and Rachel, Pam and Jim, Jess and Nick to name a few.

From 1999 until 2013, Fry and Leela’s relationship was one of the key components of the animated hit Futurama, after the former wakes up 1,000 years in the future following an accidental freezing incident.

Getting to grips with the year 3,000, Fry finds himself enamoured by Leela, the one-eyed captain of the Planet Express, and in time she returns his affection… but their relationship is far from smooth-sailing.

So how will their romance fare in the new Futurama reboot, which launches on Disney Plus after a 10-year hiatus? Billy West, who voices characters on the sitcom including Fry, Professor Farnsworth and Dr Zoidberg, dropped a major tease to Metro.co.uk.

The last time that we saw Fry and Leela in Futurama a decade ago, the entire universe was left frozen in time except for the couple, who were able to grow old together.

Given the option by Professor Farnsworth to go back to their younger selves and live their lives again, they agree to do so… so what impact could that have on their romance going forward?

When asked what’s going to happen between Fry and Leela, Billy remained tight-lipped, but did give some crucial information away.

‘I can’t say anything. I’ve got to keep some things secret, but I know that people will not be disappointed in any way with what’s going to happen,’ he answered cryptically.

As for what fans can expect from the rest of season 11, the voice star vowed that it’s ‘the same humour you know and love from Futurama’ with the original cast.

‘They take you down a certain road and then do a detour to surprise you. I like the take they have with the comedy,’ he shared.

‘There are some great topics in the storylines this season, including pandemics and whether the universe is a simulation or not. We get to find out about Kif and Amy’s children, as well as whether Zapp Brannigan gets cancelled again. There are a lot of parallels to what’s going on in our world – except Futurama is 1,000 years in the future.’

When Futurama aired what was believed to be its final episode in 2013, some viewers might have thought that was officially the end… before the announcement of the reboot came.

Billy admitted that the cast are ‘getting used to this resurrection stuff after being revived a few times’.

‘I guess it’s like a zombie show. It dies and then it comes back, luckily for all of us,’ he acknowledged.

When questioned on whether this will be the absolute final season or if there’s more in store for Futurama in the future, he added: ‘To answer your question, I don’t know. Maybe we’ll go into Futurama: The Next Generation next because I don’t know how long I’m going to be around.

‘However, whatever I’m doing, I’ll always come out of hiding to do Futurama. I hope there are many more years to come.’

Futurama is available to watch on Disney Plus.
