Wilson Sporting Goods — a top player in the professional athletic equipment market — is taking a turn into the apparel industry with the launch of its first-ever premium activewear line, Wilson Sportswear.
“For more than a century, Wilson has been designing equipment to the specifications required by the world’s greatest athletes,” said Gordon Devin, President of Wilson Sportswear. “We are excited to extend our craftsmanship, history and heritage to apparel. As athletes continue to redefine themselves, Wilson is redefining the athletes’ uniform, coupling the premium performance expected from Wilson with fresh styles inspired by athletes.”
Within the inaugural launch, several silhouettes speak to the brand’s forthcoming evolution into a household lifestyle brand. The Millenium Crewneck Sweater offers a refined take on typical workout gear with striped detailing on the sleeves and minimal logo embossment across the front. Elsewhere, a matching Montrose track jacket and pants defines the navy-blue-red colorway that dominates the debut range, while more straightforward, hybrid T-shirts and shorts were crafted with lightweight breathability in mind On the women’s side, standouts include a fly crop sweatshirt, workout-ready joggers, an on-the-court skirt and classic shorts.
“The process for Wilson has been a unique one,” said Wilson Lifestyle Head of Design, Joelle Michaeloff, of the brand’s transition into sportswear. “For a brand with 106 year of history and heritage, it’s almost mind blowing what exists within the brand and what we had the opportunity to pull from as we sought to create solutions for our athletes.
“Just like equipment we needed to respect the brand and history but not let it get in the way of the future,” she continued. “We had the honor of digging through our archives and spent time with key leaders who have been instrumental in building brands that are industry leading. But above all it was a focus on the athlete and how they live their life above anything else.”
In tandem with Wilson Sportswear’s launch, the athletic label is also expanding its Advisory Staff networks, which is currently comprised of more than 10,000 professional athletes and coaches, to include a new group of visionaries that intersect sports from different angles. New members include designer-turned-model Beija Velez, musician Kelley James and CEO of My Block, My Hood, My City Jahmal Cole, among several others.
Wilson’s new sportswear designs will drop on a bi-weekly basis, while special collaboirations with notable athletes and partners will arrive around key dates on the sports calendar. The collection is available to shop on Wilson’s website for prices ranging from $48 USD to $98 USD.
