After months of waiting the announcement of DLC for Elden Ring has come out of nowhere and, as you’d expect, it’s not what you’d expect.
Nothing was ever confirmed till now but it was always obvious that Elden Ring would get DLC. Developer FromSoftware always produces it for their Souslike games (and it’s usually always very good) and the game’s huge success basically demanded it, but it’s only now that it’s actually been announced.
There was zero build-up, or hint that the reveal was coming, with a simple tweet dropping in the early hours of the morning. The text of the tweet says almost nothing but confirms the name of the expansion as Shadow Of The Erdtree.
‘Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together. An upcoming expansion for Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in development,’ it reads. ‘We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between.’
There’s no hint of a release date, but given it’s being announced in February you might infer that a 2023 release date is likely. The only other details to be confirmed are that, unlike the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, this will be released on both current and last gen consoles (and PC, obviously).
As ever for Elden Ring, there is more information if you look closely and the image which accompanies the announcement is very curious.
The Erdtree is a giant mystical tree visible across the whole of the Lands Between and which you spend most of the game trying to reach, but it’s never shown in the state it is in the DLC image, where it seems some sort of lava or sap or puss is leaking out of it.
It’s also unclear who that is riding Torrent in the foreground. It doesn’t seem to be Melina but instead is perhaps Miquella, brother of Malenia, who was only briefly featured in the game and is said to have created the Haligtree.
Most of the references to him in the game (where he is referred to as he) are fairly oblique though and most of those in side content that is easily missed so, like most things in Elden Ring… we’re not sure what exactly is going on.
Is From purposefully trying to misdirect fans and that’s not Miquella? Or is it Malenia’s brother after all and does that mean that this is actually a prequel to the events of the main game – which the state of the Erdtree also seems to hint at?
We’d say FromSoftware will probably make thinks clearer in due time, except that’s not really how they work, but the important thing here is that the Elden Ring DLC exists and it is coming… at some point.
