Death in Paradise returns today with its 11th series on the BBC as the stars of the show are back to reprise their roles. However, there was some tongue-in-cheek tension between the actors at the recent launch of the new series.

Speaking ahead of the show’s first episode, Neville Parker star Ralf Little and Selwyn Patterson actor Don Warrington were discussing their characters.

As fans will know, the pair do not always see eye-to-eye on the BBC drama.

In particular, the commissioner is always growing exasperated with his lead detective.

In light of this, Don was asked whether he thinks his character prefers Neville or Marlon Pryce (played by Tahj Miles).

He was quizzed by the Q&A host: “Which do you think he’d rather be stuck in a cell with?”

Don replied: “I think, well, it’s hard. I think at a pinch, Marlon. Sorry.”

Ralf was quick to react, saying: “What! What! Unbelievable.”

Justifying himself, the Commissioner Patterson star added: “I just think Neville has too much about him to give the Commissioner real fun.

“I think Marlon, he can play with him a little.

“He can mould him, all kinds of things can happen between the two of them I think.”

Ralf quipped: “I thought we were making progress.”

Don went on to add while their characters are, he had to think in terms of what his character would do.

He said: “I have to think about what gives him real joy and Marlon is such easy meat for the Commissioner.”

Death in Paradise series 11 begins on the BBC tonight at 9pm.

The first episode sees the team investigating a kidnapping gone wrong as someone is killed.

The team are tasked with working out what went wrong and who is responsible for it.

Alongside the returning cast members, new character Shantol Jackson (played by Sergeant Naomi Thomas) will also be introduced.

Speaking about joining the show last summer, she said: “I’m so grateful for this amazing opportunity to join the cast of this fun-filled, entertaining series.

“I used to watch Death in Paradise with my dad in Jamaica years ago when it just started.

“And to now be in the show, knowing that he’ll be watching me, it’s truly a surreal moment.

“Looking forward to adding to the magic.”

The show also made a surprise comeback at Christmas time with a special longer episode.

This saw the previous star Danny John-Jules back on screens following his departure years prior.
