In recent years, Tim McGraw has earned a lot of attention for his appearance—both good and bad. Seemingly concerned fans and online haters alike have called the country superstar “too thin,” “unhealthy,” and even asked if he was battling an illness. But in reality, Tim is in the best shape of his life.
“Ten years ago was when I really was not taking care of myself as well as I should,” the singer explained to the crowd at the grand opening of his boutique fitness club in January. “My lifestyle wasn’t as good: up until 3 o’clock in the morning, having that extra beer with the band, eating cheeseburgers late, and not hitting the gym in the morning.”
Around that same time, Tim went to the movie theater with his wife Faith Hill and their kids, where he appeared onscreen in the trailer for his 2008 film, Four Christmases.
“My oldest daughter said, ‘Geez, Dad. You really need to do something,'” he recalled. “And the next day, I was in the gym.”
Since then, the Grammy-winning artist has cut alcohol from his life and committed himself to fitness. The result? A staggering 40-pound weight loss.
“It wasn’t like I was trying to lose 40 pounds, I was just wanting to get healthy,” Tim recently told People. “For me, it is more about feeling good and being where I want to be physically and on stage.”
More than a decade after Tim initially changed his lifestyle, the 51-year-old is in noticeably better shape. But for him, it’s about much more than just the way he looks.
“I’ve gone through a physical transformation in the last 10 years, but it’s not just my appearance that has changed,” Tim told People. “My mind is clearer, my sense of purpose is sharper, and my relationships are deeper. Consistent physical exercise helps me bring focus to my life and to the people who mean the most to me.”
