Oscar winning Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, 51, paid a touching tribute to his late daughter Ida, in a highly emotional speech after winning the Best International Feature accolade for his movie, Another Round. Ida, who was 19 at the time, tragically died in a car accident in 2019 just days into production, and was set to have a role in the film.

“We wanted to make a film that celebrates life,” Vinterberg said, “and four days into shooting, an accident took my daughter away.

“We miss her. I love her.”

According to the filmmaker, she was “blown away with excitement” upon reading the script months earlier.

During his speech that fans labelled “devastating”, Vinterberg remembered: “She was glowing with excitement, she loved this and she felt seen by this and she was supposed to be in this.

“We ended up making this movie for her as her monument.”

He began to choke up as he added: “So Ida, this is a miracle that just happened and you are part of this miracle, maybe even pulling some strings somewhere.

“But this one’s for you.”

He also credited the actors in his film for supporting him throughout the terrible time.

He said: “They granted their entire life to this and so did the film crew, and hopefully it’s on the screen and the hopefully it’s there to honour her memory.”

Following his emotional breakdown on stage, fans took to Twitter to also share their sadness and applaud him for his “beautiful” tribute.

“Whew, that hit hard. Lovely message from Thomas Vinterberg to his late daughter #Oscars,” one said.

A second described: “Wow that was the most moving #Oscars speech I ever heard.”

Another added: “Thomas Vinterberg lost his daughter during the filming of Another Round (my favourite movie of the year). This is especially emotional.”

“Sending Thomas Vinterberg so much love ahhhhh I love him so much and he deserves the world,” a fourth commented.

A fifth penned: “I’m crying, I’m so happy for Thomas Vinterberg and everyone involved with Another Round. It’s such a beautiful movie, and the award is well deserved.”

“I’m not sure how, but Thomas Vinterberg directed Another Round despite the tragic death of his teenage daughter Ida, who was supposed to be in the film. The film is brilliant and just won an #Oscar,” a sixth stated.

Someones else branded the most “devastating” speech ever on the awards show.

Vinterberg has previously spoken about how making the film helped him deal with the grief of Ida, admitted he felt there was a “higher purpose”.

“It gave a me purpose in life and kept me away from the freefall,” he told CNN.

“And I felt there was a higher purpose in making a movie for her.

“Before her death it was an ambition to make a life-affirming film; that became a necessity.

“I wanted to celebrate the life that we lose so easily.”
