However, if you’re not the squeamish type, PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy has a whole host of benefits for the skin and should be taken seriously as a solution to a wide range of grievances.
Daily Star Online visited luxe London clinic Epilium & Skin to try out the treatment and suffice to say it was like no other.
Our aesthetician revealed that while the treatment, nicknamed the ‘vampire facial,’ has been carried out for years, it was when Kim Kardashian first shared her experience of the treatment on social media that popularity boomed.
It is aimed at those looking to improve overall skin quality, with plumping, firming, lifting and hydrating benefits as a result of the accelerated regenerative process.
Tackling fine lines, acnes scars, sun damage and pigmentation, the treatment stimulates stem cells, collagen production and the formation of new blood vessels with minimal downtime.
The entire process takes around 45 minutes and begins with drawing blood much as one would for a blood test.
Once the vial of blood is collected, it is put into a centrifuge, which separates the platelets – the magic ingredient that differentiates the treatment from any other.
Golden in colour, this concentrated elixir is essentially a custom-made super serum of your body’s own creation, full of skin-reparative and enhancing properties.
At this point, I was asked whether I wanted the PRP injected or pressed into my skin with a Dermapen micro-needling device – which creates micro-abrasions in the surface of the skin, allowing for superior penetration of the plasma.
I opted for the latter and had numbing cream applied all over my face to ensure maximum comfort throughout the experience.
With the preparation complete, I had the PRP worked into my face with the Dermapen, a process which as a client simply felt like a series of vibrations with minimal discomfort.
While the treatment itself is minimally invasive, it’s worth bearing in mind that your face is likely to look red and inflamed immediately after treatment – something that is completely normal, but should be considered if you’re planning to travel home on public transport.
I was sent home with the leftover vial of the plasma to apply before bed and then again the following day to help with the healing process.
Initially my skin felt tight and almost as though there was a kind of film over it. However, this quickly passed and within a couple of weeks my skin looked noticeably more radiant and even in tone.
While I can’t say I battled with extensive wrinkles beforehand, the fine lines around my eyes and across my forehead definitely appeared diminished a month on from the facial.
I’ve also suffered fewer breakouts since the facial – an upside I definitely didn’t expect.
In this way, I’d definitely say the treatment is suitable for all ages and shouldn’t be dismissed as something for those middle-aged and above.
If you’re looking for an all-round skin-enhancing treatment, are good with blood and willing to deal with a day of redness for long-term gain, look no further than the vampire facial.
Epilium & Skin are one of only a handful of London clinics with a theatre offering day case surgical procedures, alongside their extensive range of non-surgical treatments.
