Strictly fans ‘in pieces’ after AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington break down in tears

Strictly Come Dancing fans were left emotional as AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington broke down in tears after the pair were forced to pull out of the BBC competition just one day before the final.

The 33 year old TV presenter, who has wowed the judges throughout the series, suffered a devastating blow when she hurt her right ankle which was so bad that she ‘projectile vomited’ and now cannot stand or put weight on her foot without crutches.

Meanwhile AJ and Kai, 26, appeared on Strictly It Takes Two on Friday 17 December and were left in tears as they looked back at their journey with presenter Rylan Clark.

Speaking to Rylan, AJ, who looked stunning in a vibrant yellow satin dress, said: "We are gutted as we were ready to smash it and this isn't the way that we wanted to go out, obviously, but even just looking back at all of those moments it has just been an absolute pleasure dancing with you every single week."

Drying his eyes with a tissue, Kai added: "We were really hoping that we were going to get over the line and get into the final and dance in the final.

"Weirdly we had two very energetic dances that we were given the Charleston and the Jive and we were like if we can change them maybe we can do something but the injury is just too bad and at the end of the day AJ's health is number one concern."

Meanwhile the pair were left emotional as they reflected on the standout moments from the show including Craig Revel Horwood's comments on their American Smooth.

On the judging panel, Craig told AJ: "I just wish you had started dancing as a child you would have been an absolute pro. I mean that was absolutely incredible."

Reflecting on the comment, AJ said: "I don't think he [Craig] realised the depth of what he was saying to me. Dance lessons are just something that my parents couldn't afford to let me do. They always said I would be able to do it one day and its happening."

Meanwhile fans were left in tears at the beautiful moments from their time on the BBC competition and took to social media to share their thoughts.

One penned: "Trying so hard not to cry at AJ and Kai on It Takes Two."

Another added: "Just in pieces for AJ and Kai."

A third said: "Ok that has absolutely shattered my heart to see Kai in that way. But it’s also the most beautiful thing Ive seen him do because that right there is real, raw and pure love, I’ve never seen anything like that before."

"Watching Strictly it takes two. Welling up over poor AJ and Kai. LOVE them and wanted them to win. (and I hope they’re doing it)," another fan said.

In a statement released on the Strictly Instagram account announcing her departure from the competition, which will see remaining contestants Rose-Ayling Ellis and John Whaite compete for the Glitterball trophy, they wrote: "Sadly due to injury AJ and Kai have had to withdraw from #Strictly and won’t compete in tomorrow’s final.

They added: "We want to thank them for 13 incredible weeks on the show and the pure joy they brought to the dance floor every week." followed by a red heart emoji.

AJ made the decision after consulting with medical professionals and was left "deeply upset".

She shared: "I'm deeply upset that I am unable to perform in the final due to a torn ligament in my right ankle. Learning to dance over the last 13 weeks has been an incredible honour and to do it alongside someone as special, patient and devoted as Kai is something I'll treasure forever.

"Thank you to the Strictly family for the experience, the medical team for trying to get me back on my feet and mostly, to everyone at home for watching and supporting. You've made this experience one to remember. Strictly Come Dancing has been a lifelong dream and I'm glad it came true. Good luck to my partners in dance, John & Johannes and Rose and Giovanni. I will be cheering you on (on one leg!)".
